05/07/2010: "FORDS" a company with a famous name, reputation and heritage on which to build
Fords Packaging Systems of today can trace it's heritage back to Fords (Finsbury) Ltd, a family company founded in 1928 in Finsbury, London by brothers R.E. and T.F. Ford.
Looking for a product and following changes to the legislation concerning the sealing of milk bottles, the brothers developed a gummed paper disk, which could be easily applied and sealed to the milk bottles, fufilling the hygiene requirements.
With their trade in the paper caps growing, the brothers diversified and began pioneering pre-formed aluminium milk bottle caps, a market they believed, from their observations of its development in Europe, would expand. Foreseeing a major shift towards the aluminium cap in the UK and the eventual demise of their traditional paper disc business the company began development and subsequently sales of an aluminium capping machine.
Following what Fords referred to as "The Great Changeover" UK sales of the Fords aluminium capping press expanded and attracted the interest of many leading filler manufactures. However not content with the home market the company saw the potential of exports and began drives into North and South America, Europe and Russia. Securing in 1948 its first contract with French filler manufacture M Remy, licensing the French company to manufacture the Fords machine in France.
Continuing to develop its machines and expanding its ranges introducing rotary sealers, Synchro-printing, tabbed caps and high speed machines the company established itself as a worldwide leader and expert in foil capping and sealing systems.
In 1965 the Fords family released their interest in the company, which was then acquired by The Tube Investment Group (TI), subsequently sold on to the BWI group in 1983. In the ensuing years the company diversified and expanded its range through various acquisitions and agency agreements.
Fords Packaging Systems Ltd, came into being in 1998, when 5 senior managers and directors supported by a venture capital company succeeded in a £1.3million management buy out of the company from BWI, returning it to a independently owned company, with the focus once again returned to the Fords name.
To date the company has supplied in excess of 10,000 machines to over 76 different countries, and has with continual development; introduction of new technologies and innovations in cap design expanded into new markets such as "Aseptic filling operations", "infant formula" and "sealing to glass".
Fords is the premium global business for sealing and capping technoilogy and is a partner for many of the international household names in the industry.
